On Thursday evening the PE department held their annual Sports Champions of the Year Awards night.

This is a chance to showcase the hard work and celebrate the talent and successes of our students both inside and outside of the classroom. With 38 winter teams, 25 summer teams, along with countless students being hardworking, dedicated and incredible both inside and outside of lessons shortlisting for these awards has to have been the hardest to date.

Paralympic powerlifter Liam McGarry joined us this year as our guest speaker. He was an absolute inspiration to everyone in the room. Speaking about how facing adversity and choosing to face challenges head on are the key to creating the best platform for yourself. Liam told us of his journey at school up until 17 and how sport was his life but unfortunately he was dealt a hand that meant at the age of 21 he ended up losing feeling in his lower limbs and having to rebuild his life and find a purpose again was tough. Liam spoke through the further challenges he has faced in his life and how these had affected and impacted on his training and competitions over the years. Liam is a true inspiration and has shown us that hardwork and dedication can pay off if you ensure that you continue to progress and smash barriers. Liam is competing in the Paralympic games this summer which is incredible considering his journey and we wish him every success and hope he brings a medal home! You can watch Liam on 8th September in the Paralympic Powerlifting event.

We want to congratulate all of our nominees and award winners this evening and thank all students for their continued support and commitment to all things sport at Robert May’s. We also want to thank all of the parents that continue to support us year or year!
