Year 8 Careers: Ask A Visitor
On Wednesday 22nd November, we held our annual Ask A Visitor event.
Five volunteers from the local community came in to speak to our Year 8s about their careers. The purpose of the session was two-fold; finding out how an interviewing process works and looking in depth at two careers paths.
Two students from each group met their guest for the first time in the reception area before escorting them to the interview room. After the session, our visitors were taken to a different room for a second interview and returned them to Reception at the end.
Students were given an insight into how important it is to be courteous and professional from the first moment you meet an interviewer or interviewee. Often decisions are made within the first 30 seconds, so a first impression is key.
Students had spent time in PDL planning some of the questions they would ask out guests. At 12 years old, most have not thought about the interview process before. It was great to see how students listened to what our guests were saying and responded with follow up questions, exactly as they would in a real interview. We had a great range of careers for them to find out about ranging from:
- PR and Events Management
- Engineering
- Football Agent
- Project Management
- Construction
The feedback from our volunteers was incredibly positive and students, teachers and volunteers all involved enjoyed the sessions.
We are very grateful for people who give up their time to enhance our students’ career understanding. If you would like to be part of our volunteer group, please contact me on: aidan.peake@rmays.com
