Year 9 STEM day
On Tuesday this week we held our annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Enrichment Day with the whole of Year 9.
The sessions were provided by some local businesses and colleges who came into Robert May’s School to run a variety of hands-on, practical and engaging STEM activities - many of which used small groups and had a competitive element between the groups. It is amazing how competitive things become when the opponents are your friends!
This year we had activities as diverse as:
- Building bridges from lollipop sticks and glue to test structure strength
- Building catapults to fire small balls at a target
- Building a rollercoaster to see how long a ball could roll for
- Testing different liquids
- Extracting the DNA out of strawberries
- Firing rockets under air pressure to test distance
The students were amazing and really engaged with the sessions. We are very grateful to our local providers who gave up their time to come and entertain and teach our students.
If you work for a STEM company and would like to be involved in the STEM Day or other activities we provide, please contact me via email (aidan.peake@rmays.com).
